Scope and content
Letter from Arthur Shields, Hotel Lafayette, Buffalo, New York addressed to Lini Saurin. Shields describes the pleasant experience of eating oysters in Washington: '...the memory of them lives with me. All or nearly all food we have had in America tastes as though it had been cooked a week ago and been kept warm since.' He also writes 'Yesterday when we reached Baltimore we were quite delighted because reaching that point meant that we had completed our circle of the country. I have all our journey marked in red on a map and it makes a long red line.' (T13/58)
