Scope and content
Arthur Shield managed the 1931-1932 Abbey tour of North America. This was the first of North America undertaken by the Abbey since 1914. The Company included Eileen Crowe, Barry Fitzgerald, Maureen Delany and F.J. McCormick. Lennox Robinson travelled ahead of the tour party giving lectures as part of an advance publicity campaign. Many of the dates and venues of the tour were only settled upon after the tour had already begun. According to Shields own records the company performed 238 times in 74 cities, often performing twice in one day.
