to Miller by Philip Fox, also of Oregon, Wisconsin. Lalor descendants Margaret Lalor, Philip Fox, and Tom Kinney also provided Miller with information and photographs.

Scope and content

The Lalor Letters are based on typed transcripts and/or photocopies of 46 letters, dated 1843-1931, which were written primarily by or to William Lalor, a farmer near Madison, Wisconsin, and his brother, Richard Lalor of Tinakill, County Laois and a Home Rule Member of Parliament from 1880-1892; and also by their Dillon, D'Arcy, Murphy, and other emigrant relatives in the United States and Australia.
William and Richard Lalor were sons of Patrick Lalor (1781-1856), an affluent Catholic farmer, O'Connellite Member of Parliament. in 1832-1835, and principal leader of the anti-tithe agitation in 1830-1834. They were also brothers of James Fintan Lalor (1807-1849), radical theoretician of the Young Ireland rebellions of 1848-1849, and of Peter Lalor (1827-1889), a leading Irish Australian rebel who later served as speaker of the house in the Victoria parliament.
This series also includes: Kerby A. Miller's research correspondence regarding the letters, especially with Lalor descendants Margaret Lalor, Philip Fox, and Tom Kinney; Miller's research notes from Irish and United States sources; and photocopied pages from published works, primarily on Dane County, Wisconsin and on James Fintan Lalor.
