Scope and content
Transcripts and reproductions of two October 1851 letters written to Thomas N. Chambers in Washington Territory from his brothers-in-law in County Down, plus correspondence from the Washington State Historical Society to Kerby A. Miller forwarding the letters.
Per Frank L. Green, Librarian, Washington State Historical Society: ‘Thomas N. Chambers was born near Belfast on Nov. 15, 1795, and educated in Dublin. He left Ireland in 1817, after marrying Latitia Dalzell, a cousin of Andrew Jackson. The couple lived in Tennessee for a while before coming west in 1845. Chambers became a prime mover in the part of Oregon Territory north of the Columbia River. He built the first lumber and flour mills in that area and served as a Probate Judge, and as Justice of the Peace and County Commissioner.’
