Transcript of a letter written by Thomas Colleton in Barbados to his nephew, John More, in South Carolina around 1645. Thomas Colleton (evidently a merchant) writes to his nephew John More that, because of business pressures, he is working all hours to dispatch goods and hopes to be able to send him rum, molasses and sugar in the future. He relates how a ship of poor Irish emigrants has been stuck in Barbados, with a lack of provisions to put them ashore, for six weeks. Colleton claims that they were so poor 'charity hath helpt them to form the voyage' and that he, with another man, forced the ship's captain to fulfil his charter and bring them to Port Royale. He asks his nephew if he might have work for some tradesmen among them and asks that his nephew be kind to them so that they will encourage friends in Ireland to emigrate, as well.
