Transcripts and a reproduction of a letter sent by Thomas Bernard Delany in Washington, D.C., to his uncle, William in Queen’s (Laois) County, 29 August 1853. The writer was a Bachelor of Law who had to emigrate in late 1849 because he had lost his position. His uncle was a farmer who had been evicted from his farm. Delany hopes that a relative of his in Philadelphia may be able to offer him ‘a good situation.’ He then goes on to provide his observations of Washington, Irish emigrants, and the southern United States.
