Scope and content
Transcript and reproduction of a letter written by Irish emigrant John Egan, stationed with the United States Army at Fort Monroe, Virginia during the American Civil War, to John Keane, Dublin, 10 October 1863. Attached is a report from Daniel Ryan, Superintendent, Dublin Metropolitan Police, 21 November 1863 noting that Egan's letter had been intercepted as part of an investigation into funds suspected of stolen from Keane. Per Ryan, 'The writer of the letter was formerly a shop assistant in the employment of Mr. Keane and for some time previous to his emigration he was remarked for spending money rather freely in consequence of which he was suspected for having converted some of Mr. Keane's money to his own use and this suspicion was strengthened by his abrupt exit however since the receipt of his letter it is presumed that the money which gave rise to suspicion was that received as the bounty of a Federal Recruit.'
