Scope and content

Statement (in Turkish with English translation) of Mahmut Alınak, MP for Şırnak, who was one of six Democracy Party deputies whose parliamentary immunity was removed in 1994 to enable prosecution for alleged promotion of Kurdish separatism. He was sentenced to three years and six months for separatist propaganda in December 1994. Alınak's statement is addressed to the Radio and Television Institute of Turkey General Directorate. He requests the right to reply to the accusations made against him on a state television programme on 13 July 1995, where he was accused of defaming the state by reporting the rape of one of his female constituents. The name and picture of the woman, who Alınak had not revealed publicly due to privacy and harassment concerns, were also revealed on the programme.
