Scope and content
Materials pertaining to the Robert McElderry letters, part of the larger McElderry letters held in PRONI.
Per Kerby A. Miller: 'Robert McElderry emigrated from Ballymoney, County Antrim, sometime before 1850. In that year, and throughout this correspondence, he was working keeping store and as a book-keeper in Lynchburg. In his letters, he defended slavery. He was a Protestant, but was against English tyranny in Ireland and praised John Mitchel. In 1853, he got his brother, who just arrived, a situation as a clerk in the largest grocery store in the city.'
This series contains Miller's excerpts from and notes on two of the letters, along with census and biographical research.
