Transcripts and abstracts of ten letters written by linen traders Rowland, William, and Roland (cousin of Rowland, note spelling) Redmond from the United States between 1859 and 1875, mainly to their relative William Young (nephew of William Redmond and cousin of Roland) in County Antrim, plus PRONI’s catalogue of the entire Redmond letter collection.
Rowland Redmond), based in New York and later in Savannah, Georgia, offers his opinions on the American Civil War, stating that the North should not reunite with the South in order to be rid of Southern racism. Per Kerby A. Miller: ‘The few letters copied here are part of a huge collection of Redmond family letters. However, I have a photocopy of the calendar for the entire collection, so as to put these few in context, and generally the letters are extremely boring, transatlantic business letters, with endless quotations of linen and stock prices, etc. They might be very valuable for a study of transatlantic business, but not for this purpose.’
