Proposal for a doctoral dissertation by Robert Jacobs, presented to the faculty of the Department of Dramatic Art, University of California at Santa Barbara. Arthur Shields was the intended subject of the dissertation. Jacobs writes 'There is one figure in the history of the Abbey, however, who has been almost totally neglected in the shadow of all that stellar brilliance. He is, in spite of this neglect, an immensely important, exceptionally worthwhile and devoted man of the theatre. With the most profound humility, I should like to write my doctoral dissertation about him and his period at the Abbey. His name is Arthur Shields.' The dissertation was abandoned after a few months.
