Letter copied to Boyle and submitted to the Irish Times by Hadden in response to points made in the Irish Times by Anthony Coughlan (1st July 1994). The author states to be a colleague of Boyle's and outlines points made regarding the history of 20th century status of Anglo-Irish relations, discussing dominion status of the Irish Free State versus that of Northern Ireland. Self-determination is further discussed in context of the wishes and people of Northern Ireland, "that is recognised both in the Anglo-Irish Agreement and in the Downing Street Declaration though not as yet in the Irish Constitution."
Letter from Hadden to Keane detailing the correspondence in the Irish Times between Hadden and Anthony Coughlan regarding Anglo-Irish relations. Hadden seeks any input of comment from Keane regarding the commentary on the historical view on Anglo-Irish relations and on current status of same. "I have tentatively followed the view that . . . the withdrawal of the Irish Free State was in itself a legitimate act of self-determination, taken by the representatives of Dail Eireann on behalf of the (Southern) Irish people, leaving the Acts of Union to apply only to Great Britain and Northern Ireland." Hadden outlines further his own views on relating this to present day Northern Ireland and invites comment from Keane.
Letter from Hadden to Boyle enclosing the attached letter of response Hadden received from [Justice Ronan Keane]. That letter is copied and attached, dated 24 Aug 1994 and agrees with Hadden that "the view you take . . .that the dissolution of the Union would require an act of self-determination by the people of Northern Ireland may well be correct from the perspective of British Constitutional Law. [Keane] continues to outline in points his opinion and theory on this matter.

Attached is a Council of Europe summary document outlining Boyle's role as Special Rapporteur at the Conference on the Political, Legal, Cultural and Economic Aspects of the Media in a Democratic Society, held in Russia from 30 Aug - 2 Sep 1994.
