Press release issued by the Language Freedom Movement welcoming Labour's new language policy, which makes Gaelic an optional rather than a compulsory subject for any Certificate examination. In the countdown to the 1969 general election, this means that Fianna Fáil are the only political party in favour of compulsory Irish. The press release also praises Desmond Fennell's recent proposal: 'Plandáil Chonnachta' (see G44/5/3), a proposal to establish new Irish speaking communities in the Gaeltacht areas of West Galway, loosely based on the idea of the Kibbutz in Israel.
Press release issued by the Language Freedom Movement containing extracts from the address given by Mrs. Joan O'Brien, N.T., President of the LFM, during meeting of the Dealgan Debating Society, Dundalk, in the Derryhale Hotel. The title of the address was "The Irish Language - Why is it a source of Controversy?" Addresses issues including the importance of communication, the paradox of the current Irish education system, the importance of democracy, and Irish heritage.
Press release containing extracts from an Address by Christopher T. Morris, President of the Language Freedom Movement, to a meeting of members at Moran's Hotel, Dublin on 17 February 1967. Refers to the failure of the majority of those in favour of the Replacement policy to declare their stance openly. Argues that the plan to replace the major world language with a private language not spoken elsewhere is retrograde and must be taken seriously. Reiterates the reasons for the LFM's opposition to the replacement policy. Concludes by objecting to its opponents attempts to deny the LFM freedom of speech and freedom of private assembly.
Three copies of a press release issued by the Language Freedom Movement enclosing a revised statement of policy, agreed at a recent AGM. One copy of the revised policy is enclosed.
Press release issued by the Language Freedom Movement quoting remarks made by Christopher T. Morris, LFM President, at the formal establishment of an LFM branch in Galway. Comments made relate to the annual cost of the Gaelic language programme in the primary school system. Criticises the replacement policy 'both in principle and in its highly objectionable practice of compulsion and discrimination'. Highlights that the people of Ireland have not been given a chance to have their say in the Replacement Policy. Recommends a study conducted by Fr. John McNamara entitled 'Bilingualism and Primary Education'.
Cover letter and two copies of a press release issued following a meeting of the Central Committee of Language Freedom Movement in Kilkenny on 22 September 1968. The cover letter by Patrick Browne, Honorary Secretary of LFM is addressed 'Dear Editor' and refers to media coverage on the recent actions of parents in St. Grellan's Boys National School, Ballinasloe who wish for their children to be educated in English. He writes 'LFM is the only organisation likely to come out wholeheartedly on the parents' side'. The enclosed press release addresses four issues: the rights of parents, similar situations elsewhere, UNESCO guidelines on teaching a second language, and education in Gaeltacht areas. Some handwritten phone messages on back of one of the press releases.
