Letter from Boyle to Tom [ ]. detailing an update on Anglo-Irish relations as raised by an interview with Dick Spring in the Guardian newspaper which suggested a future referendum on a North-South Ireland joint government but which was "slapped down from London" and discusses this point further in saying "the Tories were wooing the Unionists for the Maastricht vote and needed to demonstrate a new fervour for the Union. Also mentions "the twelfth passed off without much trouble but . . . "Taylor J made scandalous remark to the effect that the Provos were winning after a bomb in Newtownards". Boyle adds "we need to beef up the economic dimension of anything we write", details the position of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland following getting rid of "the homosexual issue" and that there is also "some new mess on abortion". Further comment on Northern Ireland includes "there is a certain tension. . . .the choice is up to the NI communities and then stating that if they chose separation especially if precipitated by withdrawal then it will be bloody and chaos. But if they live together all will be fine.". Boyle describes his vision for achievement, language and concept that is needed to bring communities together in Northern Ireland and that the focus is not just on what Europe can can supply but how to present this idealism to communities in Northern Ireland.
