Scope and content

Photocopy of Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Saurin's statement on his activities during the Easter rising in 1916. The statement covers the period he spent in the Volunteers before the rising, the first two days of the rising, the last day before the insurgents surrender and the following days, the statement ends with Saurin's transportation by sea to Britain. A separate statement 'The Story of the Hotel Metropole in Easter Week' which was published in 'An tOglach' on 20 March 1926, covers the three days from Tuesday evening until Friday night which Saurin spent in occupying the Hotel Metropole. The account makes several references to Arthur Shields, Saurin writes 'Subsequently Shields reported direct to Commandant General Connolly in the G.P.O. instead of linking up with us again at Fairview. He told me afterwards that Connolly said to him on that occasion: "I hope you will prove as good a man as your father." His father a pioneer in the cause of Irish Labour, was a descendant of William Orr on his mother's side and had an elder brother who had been a member of the Fenian Brotherhood.' Also describes the being reunited with Shields in the closing stages of the rising.
