Kerby A. Miller's summary of the autobiography of Philip Smith, a native of Cavan who left the town in 1846, eventually settling in Philadelphia in 1847. Taking a number of railroad construction foreman jobs across the United States, he had made a considerable amount of money by 1854 and was able to return home for a visit.
