Scope and content
Materials pertaining to the memoir of Patrick Campbell. Patrick Campbell was born around 1865 and emigrated from County Fermanagh to New York in 1884, eventually settling in Philadelphia. Kerby A. Miller writes, 'Campbell worked at a great variety of jobs for short periods of time: in a foundry for two weeks; as a bartender; in "the country" (doing farm labor?); and finally driving a milk wagon for a man named Mc Gowan, who may have been a relative from West Ulster. While working for Mc Gowan, Campbell "settles in" and seems to become quite content, surrounded by relatives or at least old friends from West Ulster: "I had not very hard work and had plenty of sport."' Campbell's journal details this work history along with discussing: his departure and Atlantic voyage; landing in Castle Island; meeting with family upon arrival in New York; moving to Philadelphia and boarding there; an accident while driving a horse-drawn milk wagon and the aftermath; life in 19th century Philadelphia. This series includes: typed copies of the Patrick Campbell memoir, written in 1884, as well as a photocopy of the original; Kerby A. Miller's research notes on Patrick Campbell and the Campbell family ; census research; a copy of Christmas Memories and Other Poems by John C. Campbell and Hugh R. Campbell, published in 1980; and Miller's correspondence with a genealogist, archivist, and Campbell relatives.
