Scope and content

Materials pertaining to an 1894 letter written by Patrick Bardan (also Barden, Burden) in New York City to ‘Mary’ in County Westmeath. A native of Kneadsbridge, Killucan, Co. Westmeath, Bardan was born about 1855 and attended the local national school. He spent some time in New York towards the end of the nineteenth century. Known as ‘The Poet,’ Bardan displayed a keen interest in poetry, local history and antiquities, and was a member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. A considerable amount of his writing has unfortunately been destroyed. Patrick Bardan died in 1936 and was buried in Coralstown Cemetery near Mullingar.
The series contains a transcript and reproduction of the letter, along with information provided to Kerby A. Miller and Líam Kennedy by the Longford-Westmeath County Library, and census and land valuation data pertaining to Bardan and the Bardan family.
