Scope and content
The White-McMillan letters are a set of 10 letters, eight of which are written by two female emigrants from Newtownards, County Down. Jane White’s letters are written from Goderich, Canada West (Ontario) to her friend Eleanor Wallace McIlwrath in Newtownards between 1849 and 1860. Anna Belle McMillan’s letters are written from Pittsburgh to her sister Eliza Cosson in 1894 and 1895 and are addressed care of Rev. William McIlwrath, Eleanor’s husband. Two other letters sent by emigrants in 1893 to the McIlwrath family are also present.
The series contains transcripts of the six Jane White letters created by PRONI; transcripts and extracts of the other four letters created by Kerby A. Miller; genealogical notes and census/directory data pertaining to the McIlwraths; correspondence between Miller, McIlwrath family descendant J.W. Russell, and historical repositories; and photocopies of Pittsburgh directories mentioning the McMillans.
