Scope and content
The Pádraig Cúndún letters consist primarily of eight letters and poems written in Irish in 1834-1852 by or to Pádraig Cúndún. Cúndún was a monolingual Munster Irish-speaker, poet, and Catholic emigrant farmer born near Youghal, County Cork who emigrated to America in 1826 and settled in Deerfield town, Oneida County, New York. The typed transcriptions and translations from Irish to English were made by Miller's colleague, Bruce D. Boling.
The series contains: Boling's typed and handwritten transcriptions and translations of Cúndún's letters and poems in English and Irish; Miller's correspondence with colleagues, archivists, and the Oneida County Historical Society; Miller and Boling's research notes; published and unpublished essays and papers related to Cúndún by Richard O'Foley, Liam Mic Mathúna, Martin Millerick, Cornelius Buttimer, and others; photocopied pages from secondary sources, including New York gazetteers and Oneida County histories; and census research.
