Scope and content

Materials related to the John Reilly letter. This series consists primarily of typescripts and a photocopy of a single letter written in 1841 by John Reilly in Baltimore, Maryland, to his father in Bellenanagh town, County Cavan. Reilly was a young, single, Irish Catholic immigrant, most likely in a mercantile occupation, or a clerkship. Also included are four additional letters written by another John Reilly, a factory owner in Newark, New Jersey, to his cousin in Ireland in 1895-1901. These are two separate sets of letters, linked only by their authors' common surname and by the fact that in 1954 each was collected separately by Arnold Schrier. Also included are: Kerby A. Miller's research correspondence with colleagues, archivists, and the Archdiocese of Baltimore; research notes from Miller, Arnold Schrier, and Bruce D. Boling; census research; and photocopied pages from secondary sources relevant to the John Reilly from Baltimore.
