Materials pertaining to a letter from P. Kennedy, Strasburg, Virginia, to Vere Foster in Ireland in 1852. Vere Foster established the Irish Female Emigration Fund in 1852. Kennedy's letter was written in response to a request placed in The Freeman's Journal for information from Irish, English and Scottish emigrants to America regarding their experiences. Kennedy's letter outlines the challenging circumstances of being an Irish emigrant to the United States at the time.
The series contains: drafts of Kerby A. Miller's typed and edited transcripts of the Kennedy letter; typed transcripts of a number of other letters to Vere Foster; census research; photocopied pages from a secondary source related to Shenandoah, County Virginia; correspondence with the Shenandoah County Historical Society and the Strasburg Museum; and Miller's research notes.
