Series 1 - McClurg/McClorg family letters

The letters were provided to Kerby A. Miller by Professor Arnold Schrier. Per Schrier: 'The originals of these letters were in the possession of the Reverend Alastair MacLurg, Templemoyle, Limavady, Co. Derry, Northern Ireland. On October 10, 1955, Reverend MacLurg wrote me that the paper of the original letters was too fragile for him to send the collection through the mail. Instead, he sent me his personal photostatic copies for perusal and on October 29, 1955 I returned the photostats to him. He did inform me that photostatic copies of the entire set were also in the P.R.O. in Belfast.' (PRONI reference T1227)

The McClurg/McClorg Letters are based on typed transcripts and/or photocopies of 31 letters, written between 1787 and 1837, written by members of the McClurg (McClorg, MacLurg, and other variant spellings) family who originated in Templemoyle, Limavady, County Derry. The Presbyterian McClurgs came into conflict with the Church of Ireland during the late 18th century over the required payment of tithes to the latter. Many family members emigrated to the United States between the 1780s and 1830s. Included in this series are transcripts of the letters (along with some photostatic copies), correspondence between Miller and family descendants, Miller's genealogical notes on the family, and copies of publications used in researching the family in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and County Derry.
