Scope and content
Two photocopies of the 'Statement of Matthew Nunan' provided to historian Hubert Howe Bancroft to be used for Bancroft's History of California, Vol. VII, 1860-1890 (San Francisco: the History Company). Nunan was born in Limerick circa 1828 (but listed by Bancroft as 1836; Nunan provided various dates of birth over his life and may not have known his exact age) and emigrated to California in 1855 after four years in New York. Nunan was successful in mining but grew weary of it and opened a grocery in San Francisco in 1859, marrying the following year. Nunan purchased an interest in the Mission Street Brewery in 1866 and was sole proprietor by 1870. Nunan was sheriff of San Francisco between 1875 and 1879, a founder of the City and County Bank, and was a member of several business and Irish American organisations. He died in 1916, aged ca. 87, and had six children.
