Scope and content
The Gracey-Maloney letters are a set of nine letters (of which eight are located in this series; a further letter is located at P155/66/8/1) written to members of the Gracey family in Ballyhornan, County Down between 1847 and 1944.
William Gracey was the first emigrant of the family, emigrating to Philadelphia in 1847. His initial letter describes his transatlantic voyage and initial experiences in his new country. Later letters written decades later provide his relatives in Ireland with information on his American family.
The series includes: transcripts (created by both Kerby A. Miller and donor Marie Gribbon) and reproductions of eight letters; correspondence, family information, and secondary research materials provided by Gribbon including a copy of the West Belfast Historical Society’s Outline Annual 1975.
