Includes newspaper cuttings relating to Machiavelli, to reviews of books about him and to the Vietnamese War, from Irish, Italian, American and English newspapers (1960s); two postcards of [Italy]; typed pages relating to G Freyer's book, 'Aspects of Machiavellism: 1469-1969' and his attempts to find a publisher; a letter from Anthony Hanson, 197 Victoria Avenue, Hull, Yorkshire, to G Freyer enclosing a photocopy of part of a letter from [Cardinal] John H[enry] Newman to W.J. O'Neill Daunt on lying (30 June 1970); copy of "The Word" containing an article entitled 'Machiavelli monster of villainy' by G Freyer (Nov 1969); printed pages of an article entitled 'The Ideas of Machiavelli' by G Freyer, [published in "Scrutiny" (1939) ["Scrutiny" a quarterly review, was edited by F.R. Leavis from 1932-1953. G Freyer studied under Leavis at Cambridge].; letters from various publishing houses and others, relating to G Freyer's efforts to have his book 'Aspects of Machiavellism: 1469-1969' published in 1968; copy of the report of Professor Walter LI Bullock, Department of Italian Studies, University of Manchester, to G Freyer's PhD thesis entitled 'The Fortune of Machiavelli'; three letters relating to G Freyer's PhD thesis from Professor Walter LI Bullock, Arborfield, Langham Road, Bowdon, Cheshire and University of Manchester (Dec 1940-May 1941); a group of letters from publishers, including university presses, relating to the publishing of Freyer's book 'Aspects of Machiavellism: An Enquiry into the Role of Machiavelli in the Intellectual Life of the West' in 1941, including some copy letters from G Freyer, 42 Owlstone Road, Cambridge. Also included are two letters from personal friends, George Paterson, The County Museum, Armagh (17 May 1941) in which Paterson refers to a possible delay in Freyer obtaining passports because of complaints made by the boys' parents concerning his views. The other letter is from Francis Scarfe, French Dept., University of Glasgow, in which he congratulates Freyer 'for having fallen into the eminently bourgeois state of marriage ... In fact I ought to congratulate you about everything you have done save failing to reach Brazil'. Scarfe writes that he was a member of the French Communist Party in 1938, has now applied for a Professorship in New Zealand and has published a book of poems (4 June 1941; two letters relating to the publication of a paper by G Freyer entitled 'Machiavelli in Elizabethan and Jacobean England (1941); nine pages of a lecture/paper entitled 'The Relevance of Machiavelli' based on Freyer's New York University lecture of 29 May 1969; photocopies of two articles entitled 'Machiavelli as Thinker' by G Freyer, published in "The Irish Times" (18 & 19 June 1969); printed copy of Machiavelli's letter to Francesco Vettori, dated 10 Dec 1513; programme of lectures for the third Albert Schweitzer lecture series entitled 'The Prince 1969' at New York University Feb-Apr 1969.
