Scope and content

Letters from Louis Sheaffer relating to his research for a book on Eugene O'Neill. Includes letter dated 22 July 1961 from Louis Sheaffer, 5 Montague Terrace, Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Main 4-1179 addressed to Arthur Shields regarding Eugene O'Neill's play 'A Moon for the Misbegotten' Shields had sent Schaefer a copy of an amended script for the play that he had received from O'Neill. Schaefer writes 'I had only skimmed before through your script and was surprised at the extent of cuts. I'm no judge of such things, having had little actual experience in the theatre, but it seemed to me that at least a half-hour's playing time was dropped through all the cuts.' He also mentions that 'on the reverse side of the final page someone wrote (was it you): "Throw the responsibility on the audience and you can get away with murder." ' Also includes copies of two letters, one on each side of a page. One letter signed by James F. Mathias of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, 551 Fifth Avenue, New York certifies that Schaefer 'has been appointed by the Trustees of John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to a fellowship for a period from August 1, 1962 to July 31, 1963. During this period Schaefer will devote himself to studies of the life and times of Eugene Gladstone O'Neill.' Schaefer is recommended for confidence and consideration to all persons he presents the letter to. The reverse side contains a brief letter from Henry Allen Moe, President, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, 551 Fifth Avenue, New York addressed to Louis Schaefer, 5 Montague Terrace, Brooklyn Heights, New York congratulating him his appointment to a Guggenheim Fellowship.
