Letter from C Walmsiley, Poor Lae Commission Office, Dublin, to the Clerk of Guardians of the Castlebar Union, giving the reasons why the Poor Law COmmissioners feel it necessary to dissolve the Board of Guardians re-elected the previous March. They have not pursued some immediate lessors to pay their poor rate and a large sum is now owed. Some of the defaulters and memebers of the Board, including the Chairman George Charles 3rd Earl of Lucan. The workhouse with accommodation for 600 has never had more than 405 inmates, who are maintained by government funds. A recent act giving more powers to the Guardians of Unions will shortly come into effect. The Commissioners feel the Board of Guardians has not fulfilled its duties and he encloses the order dissolving it.
