Letter from barrister Peter Duffy, former Chairperson of Amnesty International's International Executive Committee, to Christopher Hall, Amnesty International legal adviser, providing his reasons for why Amnesty should ask for permission to intervene in the Şükran Aydın case and why an Amnesty amicus submission to be so important in this case. Duffy notes that this will be the first case since Ireland v UK (1978) 2 EHRR 25 in which the Court is asked to find and is likely to find that torture occurred, and is the first case involving rape allegations against the police to come for judgment.
