Scope and content
[Copy] letter from George Charles, 3rd Earl, Castlebar, to the Rt. Hon. Henry Labouchere [Chief Secretary], asking for his name to be withdrawn from the requisition sent to the Lord Lieutenant, in consequence of the instructions relative to reproductive works, signed by Mr. Walker', which have appeared in the newspapers. He expands on his objections to the Poor Employment Act, in particular relating to drainage. He writes that if the government persists in their determination not to recall Parliament and 'are content to meet the unparalleled difficulties in their afflicted country and to relieve its appalling distress by the Poor Employment Act along', then he foresees 'that general disaffection and a toal disorganization of the body social and politic' will follow.
