Scope and content
Transcripts of two letters written by James Stewart in San Francisco to his friend Mr. Coulter in Belfast. The pair last saw each other in 1871. Since then, Stewart lost his money in mining speculation ('Since then I have plodded Steadily along in the daily routine of business life, trying to regain by hard work what I foolishly lost. - I recognize the fact, however, that my life has been a failure'). Nevertheless, he provides updates on his and Coulter's relatives in San Francisco and expresses his optimism for the United States.
