The Larry Elyan manuscript was sent to Professor Kerby A. Miller in 1992 by Professor Arnold Schrier, University of Cincinnati.
The Joshua Glasser letter, the Cherrick letters, and related information were compiled from materials sent to Professor Arnold Schrier, University of Cincinnati, on 18 April 1991 by Rosalind Cherrick Fine and Fred Cherrick, and augmented by information provided by Maurice Glasser on 28 April 1991.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

Memoir materials and letters from Irish Jewish emigrants Gerald Goldberg, Enid Mescon, Larry Elyan, Joshua Glasser, and the Cherrick family ranging from the 1880s to 1920s. Kerby A. Miller's colleague, Arnold Schrier, collected and shared these materials with Miller in the early 1990s.
Gerald Yael Goldberg (b. 1912, d. 2003) was a lawyer and politician. The son of Lithuanian Jewish refugees, he became the first Jewish Lord Mayor of Cork in 1977.
Enid Mescon of Atlanta, Georgia, whose mother was from Cork, writes about her family's life in Cork at the turn of the 20th century, including how their surname had been anglicised from 'Zacks' to 'Jackson', her mother's memories of growing up in Cork, and how the family maid committed suicide when she learned that the Jacksons were emigrating to New York.
Laurence 'Larry' Elyan's (d. ca. 1992) memoir discusses his family's life in Cork and memories of growing up with his grandfather, Reverend Meyer Elyan (1844-1928), who came from the Lithuanian city of Žagarė to Cork in 1881. Elyan notes the poor economic conditions in which the small Jewish population of the city lived when Rabbi Elyan arrived and a rift in the community caused by a death of a man who worked on the Sabbath.
The Cherrick and Glasser families emigrated from Dublin to America between 1908 and 1925.
The series consists of: Kerby A. Miller's correspondence with Arnold Schrier and colleagues; Arnold Schrier's correspondence with some of the memoir writers and their relatives; a typed transcript of 'Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mewed' and a photocopy of 'Towards a History of Cork's Jewish Communities' by Gerald Goldberg; a photocopy of 'From County Cork to New York with the Jacksons' by Enid Mescon in The Ethnic American Woman: Problems, Protests, Lifestyle, edited by Edith Blicksilver, Kendall/Hunt Pub. Co., 1978, 321-324; 'The Irish Connection' by Larry Elyan; a photograph of Julius Cherrick from 1924; Arnold Schrier's annotated list of the Cherrick family letters, 1923-1925, which includes a typed transcript of Joshua Glasser's letter; a programme from the Cincinnati Ballet's 1990-1991 season; and research notes.
