Scope and content

The John McClancy (Clancy) diary documents the voyage of John McClancy from Milltown Malbay, County Clare to America in 1888. Per Kerby A. Miller's transcript of the diary: 'Written by a member of the Clancy/McClancy or Mac Fhlannchaidhe family, an hereditary bardic family, of Islandbawn, Milltown Malbay, Co. Clare. The author was probably far more literate in Irish than English, for the members of his family were still transcribing or composing Irish verse after their emigration to America in the post-famine period. John Clancy was born in 1861.' The series consists of handwritten and typed transcripts of the diary; census research; passenger lists for the Gallia in 1888; and Miller's research notes.
