Telefax (and copy) signed R. [Robert/'Fred', British government] for [Sinn Féin], reiterating commitment to their 9-paragraph document and necessity for an assurance that violent activity has ceased; stating that [the Secretary of State] is absent for the week - encouraging questions. 'Off the record' stating 'we are appalled at the present mess' and urging them to seek a 'clear answer on timing'. (With caption by [Éamonn Downey] referring to Setting the record straight where the text has been amended.)

File of handwritten and typescript documents focussing on a handwritten document from Sinn Féin [either by McGuinness or by Bradley] of 10 May which tacitly offers the private assurance the British have been seeking, in order 'to proceed without delay to the delegation meetings' [i.e. offering the British a ceasefire]. Extensive commentary by [Éamonn Downey] on its authorship, Delivery, and other points contained; it was delivered to James and David in London by Brendan Duddy on 11 May, while consciously omitting a paragraph where Sinn Féin caution the ceasefire may be only of a short duration.

Original handwritten letter from M[ichael Oatley], Pretoria (postmark Kingston upon Thames 30 March), to Brendan Duddy. Reference to their recent long-distance call where Oatley did not feel it appropriate to talk much. Some domestic matters concerning 'P' and Eve. Supplying contact details for himself in Johannesburg and Zimbabwe. Also informing him that 'there can't possibly be any service of the pipeline at the mainland end ... while the weather looks so black', but assuring him again that while this renders things difficult it ought not to affect Duddy's personal position. NOTE: this document is partly restricted and a reprographic copy will be available for consultation.
