Lecture, 'Youth on the Land'
UGA P/P134/12/1/2/10/29 · Item · 1942
Part of Personal

First 14 pages of a typed copy of a lecture given by Father Hayes at Cork [see also P134/12/1/2/10/90]. Father Hayes advocates for the reestablishment of Rural Science and agricultural education, rural youth clubs, GAA playing fields in every parish, and other forms of recreation to keep youth engaged in their community. Father Hayes mentions the agricultural summer school that Muintir na Tíre has arranged to be held at Pallaskenry in 1943 in cooperation with the Salesian Fathers. He questions whether Irish universities have done all they can for young people, and suggests that decaying mansions taken from divided estates be given to local voluntary bodies such as Muintir na Tíre to serve as part-time folk and agricultural schools.
