Folder of research carried out by Máiréad Robinson on Aran knitting practices.

Included are her proposal, working papers, and drafts and final copy of a report 'Interim Report on the traditional stitches of Aran Knitting' (Sep 1982).

Two notebooks that record interviews with individuals and groups, with the name of the interviewee, and their memories. Details such as when they learned to knit, the stitches they knew, what it meant to them economically, and many personal recollections.

The research explores knitting as an important cottage industry and a highly developed craft that descends directly from a Celtic past, both in its elaborate stitches and the oral transmission of knowledge of the stitches. Differences between Inishmore and the two smaller islands are noted. Lists of stitches in both their Irish and English language names, with a handwritten list of sources, printed extracts from published material, and 2 copies of a blank postcard from the Museum of Inishmaan featuring a photograph from 1904. Research and other material collected by Tim and Máiréad Robinson from a variety of sources in researching the maps and writing work. It includes correspondence exchanging information and ideas, notes, photographs, sketches and copies of secondary readings.

Arrangement is broadly by subject area, there is some intersection between subjects and correspondents reflecting the inter-disciplinary nature of Robinson's research and writing. The related material field makes an effort to reflect this.

Copy typed letter from Robinson to Fr Dara Molloy following the publication of 'Mementos of Mortality'. Discusses the benefits of a possible FÁS scheme under archaeological supervision to restore some of the monuments on Aran. (Undated).

Letter from Ríona Egan, a student of Heritage Studies at GMIT enclosing field research she has done on the Wayside Memorials of counties Clare, Mayo and mainland Galway. The enclosure and a copy of Robinson's reply with a few notes is included (6-13 Mar 2003).

File includes research article by Etienne Rynne, "Slate Medals and Amulets from the Aran Islands"; Correspondence between Rynne and Larch S. Gerrard of the Manx Museum, Isle of Man (1974, discussing parallel interests in slate and pebble objects on Aran Islands as well as on Isle of Man. Includes black and white photograph print of two slate medals found on Inis Oírr (From National Museum of Ireland). Also manuscripts notes, writings, research, and reports used by Rynne in his work.

Five black and white photographs mounted on a board relating to "Ara-na-Póg" by Dion Boucicault. Each photograph features scenes from the play with unidentified actors.

Two copies of an essay written by Tim Robinson entitled 'Aran's Square Root', in which he explores his artistic instinct to imagine a sculptural form of the Aran landscape. He focuses on the Wormhole / Poll na bPéist, and extends his theory with a mathematical equation.
