Folder of research carried out by Máiréad Robinson on Aran knitting practices.

Included are her proposal, working papers, and drafts and final copy of a report 'Interim Report on the traditional stitches of Aran Knitting' (Sep 1982).

Two notebooks that record interviews with individuals and groups, with the name of the interviewee, and their memories. Details such as when they learned to knit, the stitches they knew, what it meant to them economically, and many personal recollections.

The research explores knitting as an important cottage industry and a highly developed craft that descends directly from a Celtic past, both in its elaborate stitches and the oral transmission of knowledge of the stitches. Differences between Inishmore and the two smaller islands are noted. Lists of stitches in both their Irish and English language names, with a handwritten list of sources, printed extracts from published material, and 2 copies of a blank postcard from the Museum of Inishmaan featuring a photograph from 1904. A large page with drawings and titles of the various stitches.

Material from knitwear company, Cniotáil Inis Meáin advertising their new collection, inspired by Tim Robinson's writings. The company is run by Áine and Tarlach de Blácam. Tim encloses a piece he has written for them on the company's 21st birthday. Some newspaper cuttings featuring their collections, and advertising material is also included.

Printed email from Graham Mullen to Robinson, who has worked on the Burren cave index with Tony Boycott (see P120/3/2/2/2). Requests that Robinson read and comment on an article by Charlie (his colleague, Charles Self) 'The Caves of the Aran Islands'. The text of the paper is included.

Three pages of notes translate some of Zimmer's text on the subject of St Enda. The remainder of the file contains hundeds of photocopied pages from the volume. In German language.

Copies taken from the the papers of Julius Konietzko, an ethnographic explorer who visited the Aran Islands between 1911-1914. The notes are handwritten and include drawings of archaeological artefacts. In German language.

Handwritten references to sources Robinson intends to consult, and Library request slips. As well as sources relating to Land History, the Civil Survey and Forts on Aran, it also includes notes on the Irish Iodine and Marine Salts Manufacturing Co Ltd, and a list of newspaper microfilms.

Large folder of press cuttings containing articles relating to the Aran Islands, but covering a wide variety of subjects. The cuttings having been taken from publications including The Irish Times, Connacht Tribune, Anois, Amárach, Sunday Tribune, and others.

The cuttings have been filed into decades, but no further arrangement has been carried out beyond this level.

Series of 'Nuachtáin Árainn Mhór' and 'Nuacht Litir'. An almost complete set of weekly newsletters in the Irish language that were produced and distributed locally. Content includes articles, poems, songs and cartoons. Some margin notes from Tim Robinson indicate he used these as reference material.
