The letters were transcribed by Kerby A. Miller from the Greene Family Letters held at the University College Dublin Archives (P2/D/6).

Materials pertaining to 10 letters written by or to Irish emigrants James Norris and Cathy Greene. James Norris, writing between 1902 and 1938, emigrated to Quebec and became a priest. Cathy Greene, writing to her mother from Brooklyn in 1884, writes that her circumstances are bad, being out of work and full of anxiety borne of intense loneliness. Included in the series are transcripts of the letters and Kerby A. Miller's research on Greene, including a copy of his essay "I cannot banish the thought of home": Young Irish Women's Responses to Urban-Industrial America in which the story of Greene's letter features.
