Scope and content
The Gamble Crawford letters consist of nine letters written between Gamble Crawford in Richfield, Ohio and family in Ballymena, County Antrim, and another Crawford relative named Emma to the Crawford family in Ballymena, all between 1860 and 1887. Kerby A. Miller writes, 'other papers in this collection suggest that Crawford's brother and family in Ballymena were well-to-do, and were involved in horse breeding and show-jumping. William G. Crawford (Gamble's brother or nephew?) was a member of the Royal Dublin Society, entering his horses in the annual horse show, as in 1898.'
The series contains: Kerby A. Miller's typed transcript of one of the letters in full; Miller's abstracts for the other letters; biographical research on the Crawford family; census and land valuation research; and Miller's research notes.
