All of the brothers/authors were emigrants. Andrew, a stonecutter, lived in the New York area and died in Newark, New Jersey in 1858. James, a miner and laborer, first settled in Ohio before becoming a miner in California in the 1850s; over the next twenty years he spent time in California, Oregon, and British Columbia. William, a small-farmer, lumberer, and lime-burner, settled in St. George, New Brunswick and had 12 children. He was joined in 1865 by his brother Malcolm. John was in Glasgow during the 1870s, where he worked in a laundry.
