Scope and content
Materials pertaining to the Francis Woolsey letter. This letter, written by Francis Woolsey in Greenpoint, New York to his brother Alexander in Belfast in 1877, was collected by Arnold Schrier, a collaborator of Kerby A. Miller's. Miller notes: 'According to information obtained by Schrier, Alexander Woolsey was a railway porter in Belfast. Francis Woolsey emigrated two or three years prior to 1877 because of lack of work in Ireland. His job in Long Ireland was driving a street car. Alexander, the recipient of this letter, was annoyed because he had been expecting to receive some money for their parents. Alexander never replied to his brother's letter, and the family in Ireland never knew what became of Francis Woolsey and his family in America.'
The series contains: typed transcripts of the letter; Arnold Schrier's and Kerby A. Miller's research notes; Schrier's correspondence with the donor; a photocopy of the original letter; census research; photocopied pages from secondary sources on New York; Miller's correspondence with researchers.
