Scope and content

Materials pertaining to the Catherine Ann McFarland letters.
Per Kerby A. Miller's notes: 'Catherine Ann McFarland left Londonderry in the ship Mohango, (captained by Capt. Raymond Corrish) arriving in Philadelphia on June 21, 1853, with two trunks as baggage,' and that she 'was born October 18, 1828, probably in Derry. She had two brothers, John and David, (born between 1826 and 1831). David was apparently still alive in 1855 but John had died shortly before she wrote the first letter to her mother. It is possible that John and David had gone to sea.' McFarland eventually settled in Philadelphia and married Hugh Hutchinson from Moneymore, County Derry who had himself emigrated in 1834. She died in 1920 at 92 years of age.
The series contains: Miller's typed transcripts and abstracts of the letters between McFarland and her mother and brothers; typed transcripts of letters from William Mitchell, which were also originally included in the original Mitchell-McFarland letters in PRONI; census research; photocopies of the original letters; correspondence with researchers, Bruce D. Boling, and genealogists; copies of newspaper clippings; photocopied pages from secondary research on Philadelphia and the shipping industry in Derry; Miller's research notes and timelines for the family and the letters.
