Scope and content
Materials pertaining to two letters written to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Baxter from their nephew and grandniece David and Sarah Armstrong in Hampshire County, Virginia. The first letter was written in 1826 to Richard in Belfast by David; the second to Mrs. Baxter in Dromore, County Down from Sarah in 1843. It is possible Mrs. Baxter may be a daughter-in-law rather than wife of Richard Baxter, a Belfast hardware merchant.
The series includes: very brief notes on the family; transcripts and reproductions of the letters, and an excerpt from O’Brien, Michael J. (1979), Irish Settlers in America: A Consolidation of Articles from The Journal of the American Irish Historical Society (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing) discussing Hampshire County.
