Scope and content

January 1994 press release regarding the upcoming 17 February 1994 appearance of persecuted lawyers Tahir Elçi and Sabahattin Acar before the Diyarbakır State Security Court on charges of aiding and abetting the PKK. The lawyers could face prison sentences of 10-15 years if convicted. The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights calls for politely worded letters to be sent to Turkish Government officials expressing concern about the allegations of torture, requesting a thorough and impartial investigations of those charges, and urging that Elçi, Acar and their fellow defendants receive a fair trial. The Committee states that, 'The scale of the Turkish security forces' actions against the legal profession in Diyarbakır suggests a concerted attempt to silence the right of legal defence of politically unpopular clients.'
