Scope and content

Statement of Zeki Aksoy (fingerprinted, not signed, as he was unable to move his hand), in which he describes his imprisonment and torture. Aksoy states that approximately 20 policemen arrived at his house on 24 November 1992 with a detainee who had shown them where his house was. After his father and two of his brothers were beaten, he and one of his brothers were taken to Kızıltepe Security Headquarters, where they were beaten further. Aksoy was held in Kızıltepe for 9 days, during which his house was raided further. Aksoy was then transferred to Mardin, where he was held for 16 more days. Aksoy described incidences of extreme torture, including hanging, beating, electrogenital torture with water being thrown at him, and verbal abuse as police attempted to get him to confess to knowing an individual named Metin ('If you don't know him, you will know him under torture'). Aksoy was released on 10 December 1992 and learned that his father had been tortured in custody as well. Aksoy states that the day before their release, 'they put their firearms in front of us and took a shot of a total of 14 people. I learnt later that we had been shown on television... ...When I came before the prosecutor I said that the statement attributed to me was untrue. The prosecutor told me to sign the bottom of the statement.' Aksoy said he was unable to sign the statement as he could not move his hand, and the prosecutor released him.
