Scope and content
Materials pertaining to the memoir of Andrew J. Byrne. Kerby A. Miller notes that Byrne's memoir covers 'much of Byrne's harrowing experiences as a Union soldier in the early years of the Civil War, and his post-war experiences as a skilled but (of necessity) transient worker in the building trades in Midwestern and Eastern US states, through his return to Ireland when the beginning of the great US depression of 1873- 77 temporarily ruined the labor market,' and that 'other sections relate his Dublin childhood and adolescence, his affiliation with Young Ireland, the Famine, his very troubled first marriage, his various emigrations (four times!) and returns to Ireland, his pre-Civil War service in the US Army on the Southwest frontier, his service during the last years of the Civil War and his and his comrades' response to Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and his participation in the Fenian movement in Dublin in 1865-67 to escape imprisonment for which he went back to the US for one last sojourn before his permanent return to Ireland.' Series includes: a copy of the 2008 published memoir, Memoir of Andrew J. Byrne: Veteran of the American Civil War edited by Byrne's grandson; Miller's highlighted photocopy of the memoir and his typed transcription of sections of it; and Miller's research notes.
