Scope and content

[This series contains outdated attitudes or language that does not reflect the current views or positions of the University of Galway Library. Reader discretion is advised.] Materials pertaining to the memoirs of Rev. John Joseph Hogan. The son of an affluent Catholic strong farmer family near Bruff, County Limerick, John Joseph Hogan was born in 1829 and emigrated to St. Louis Missouri in 1848 via New Orleans. Hogan wrote two memoirs, Fifty Years Ago: A Memoir and On the Mission in Missouri, 1857-1868 documenting his life and work. Fifty Years Ago, the memoir of his family and life in Ireland and his emigration, was written in 1898 and published in Kansas City in 1907, and On the Mission in Missouri, 1857-68, was written earlier and published in Kansas City in 1892. Hogan's Fifty Years Ago provides very thorough accounts of his decision to emigrate, his decision to make his destination the Diocese of St. Louis and the western US mission, and of his travels by land and water to Liverpool, New Orleans, and upriver to St. Louis. Hogan died in 1913.
