Arthur Shields directed the first production of Eugene O'Neill's play 'Moon for the Misbegotten' which opened in Columbus, Ohio on 20 February 1947, after touring a number of cities the production was shut down by the police in March 1947 in Detroit because 'obscene' dialog. The play was subsequently regarded as one of O'Neill's finest. Shields provided Louis Sheaffer O'Neill's biographer with background information on the production.
