Scope and content
Kerby A. Miller's notes on a letter written by A. Douglas, Newtonstewart (County Tyrone?), to Alexander McGough, Ontario, Canada, 22 March 1843.
Per Miller: ‘Comments on the death of McGough's wife, her sister-in-law, in Canada. Much typical religious consolement on death and bereavement. Gives other family news from Ireland; one male relative has gone to England with the army. Another relative is serving an apprenticeship as a housewright. One relative had died, falling into a boghole while walking at night; some supposed that he had been drinking, but Mrs. Douglas denied it. The last part of the letter is written by Mrs. Douglas' daughter, McGough's niece; mentions "an agitating politics through out the countery some are for the repeal of the Corn Laws others for the peoples Charter .... " The photocopy of this letter is poor, and almost all the news is personal and familial. Thus, notes are not worth taking in detail. Furthermore, the letter may be from Newtonstewart in Wigtownshire, Scotland.’
