Scope and content
The William Stavely letters are a set of 16 letters written between 1844 and 1867 by William Stavely (son of Reformed Presbyterian Covenanter minister Rev. William J. Stavely, see P155/25/4) to his brother James in Manchester and in Belfast. The Stavelys were originally from near Ballymoney, County Antrim. William Stavely wrote his letters from a number of locations across the northern United States in Wisconsin, Michigan, and ultimately Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where he worked with an oil company.
The series consists of Kerby A. Miller’s biographical notes on the Stavely family, Miller’s transcripts of Stavely’s letters, and PRONI’s transcripts of three letters written by Rev. William Stavely on an 1850-1851 return visit to Ireland discussing his family in America.
